Archiving a few old pictures

I am just using this post as a kind of archive, holding old photos that will otherwise become lost when I in the near future discontinue my personal domain.

A photo of a ballast comparison I did for an N scale layout back in 2010.

Some photos relating to a weathering challenge held in 2015.

Something is wrong with the photos

Something seems to have happened with the photos on this blog. Many, or most, of the them are no longer visible. I'll try to fix that.

EDIT September 22, 2022: All the photos have been restored.

Scenicking done

The scenery is done, I think. I have added trees, bushes, differs layers of static grass and more. Color tones created with an airbrush.

A pine tree

Scenicking has started, most notably with a pine tree.

Engine shed, part 4, final

The engine shed has been finalized, i.e. painted assembled and weathered.

Engine shed, part 3

I have done the roof panels. The prototype features a wood shingle roof, as far as I can see from my old photos. It took some experimenting to find a way of modeling that. I wanted it as true to the prototype as possible, but still take an acceptable time to finish. This is one of the panels, but not yet stained or weathered.

And this is how I did it: I started with the same 0.4 mm plywood that I used for the walls and measured and marked for scribing and cutting.

I then scribed the ply using a dental tool to give the impression of individual shingles.

Next I made horisontal cuts, forming strips of shingles side by side.

Then I glued the strips horizontally on to sheet styrene, with the strips overlapping some.

And that's more or less it. 😀

Engine shed, part 2

All the wall panels are done, board and batten style.

Engine shed, part 1

I have started to build the engine house, or the engine shed, as the Brits would say. I am building it from scratch, using 0.4 mm plywood and individual pieces of scale lumber. Not the most efficient way of modeling, but I find the tinkering somewhat relaxing and amusing.

Here is what I have done so far.

The wall sections have not yet been glued together. For the time being they are just leaning on each other.

Ballasting done

The next obvious step was of course ballasting. Now done, although weeds and grass will later be added.

As for size comparison. Although this is O scale but 2 ft gauge the model rail gauge is 12.7 mm which is right in between H0 and N scale. Rail is code 70.

In the last picture, note the Sunday dinner chicken in the upper right corner 😀

All track laid and weathered

Finally, all track has been laid and weathered. Weathering included spraying with Vallejo German Black Brown (70.822) and dusting with AIM weathering powders, mostly Medium Earth but also some Light Rust in the occasional spot. I have started to avoid the AIM rust powders since they in my opinion gives a to stark red or orange tone. At least for track weathering.

Here are som photos.

Ballasting comes next.

Turnout weathering

I ran out of rail and had to order some more. While waiting for the rail to arrive I started some track and turnout weathering.

Track and Turnouts

Track laying has commenced. I'm using Micro Engineering code 70 rail and O-scale spikes from the Proto:87 Stores.

Turnout construction is also ongoing. The turnouts are built in situ. I'm using On2 templates from Fast Tracks as a base but has adjusted the tie placement in order to better comply with the prototype. I also build switch handles based on prototype pictures.

Here is what I'm aiming at 😏
